Will third time be a charm?

The Northern Kentucky University Men's Soccer team advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Division II Tournament 4-3 on penalty kicks against Lewis Nov. 16 in Kansas City, Mo. This marked the first time in 20 years that the Norse won a game on penalty kicks, according to the NKU Sports Information Web site.

The Northern Kentucky University Men's Basketball team had no hitting from three-point range as it had 13 of them in the 75-57 win Nov. 21 at the Bank of Kentucky Center. Sophomore guard Dustin Maguire hit 7-of-9 from the arc, as the Norse shot 13-for-25 (52 percent) from three-point range.

After falling to Rockhurst in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship game Nov. 9, the Northern Kentucky University Men's Soccer team will be heading back to Kansas City, Mo., for the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse were selected as the No. 2 seed in the Midwest region and will take on the No. 3 seed Ashland at 4 p.m. Nov. 14.

The Northern Kentucky University Men's Basketball team won its first regular-season game at the Bank of Kentucky Center, defeating Ferris State 72-57 Nov. 15. Sophomore guard Dustin Maguire led the Norse with 28 points in the game. NKU had no trouble getting the win, as they had an 11-point lead going into halftime.

The run in the NCAA Division II Tournament ended Nov. 16 for the Northern Kentucky University Women's Soccer team, as it lost to Wisconsin-Parkside 1-0 in Kenosha, Wis. The Rangers scored the winning goal in the 27th minute as Meredith Novak notched her 15th goal of the season.

For the Norse the opportunity to play a Top 10 women's team from Division I was tremendous. "For Louisville to come here and play us, it was a pleasure," NKU head coach Nancy Winstel.

It was a hard-fought battle, but the Louisville Cardinals came back from four points down in the second half to defeat the Norse 84-69 Nov. 8 at the Bank of Kentucky Center. This was the first meeting between the two schools and the NCAA allowed Louisville, a Division I school to travel on the road for an exhibition game.

The Northern Kentucky University Men's Soccer team struggled over the weekend, losing a Top 25 game to Drury 3-2, Sept. 26 in Springfield, Mo., tying Rockhurst 0-0, Sept. 28 in Kansas City, Mo. In the first game, the loss to the Panthers was the first regular-season loss for the Norse in 742 days, according to the NKU Sports Information Web site.

Alcohol sales allowed in Center

With the Bank of Kentucky Center opening its doors this week, students and the public will see something different on campus - the ability to purchase alcohol. Northern Kentucky University allows alcohol at official University functions, and approved non-university functions in the President's home, the Alumni-Reception Center, and other non-public areas on the campus as designated by the president, according to NKU's administrative regulations on it's Web site.

If there was a question as to whether the Northern Kentucky University Men's Soccer team should be No.1, the Norse answered with a 2-0 win against UW-Parkside Sept. 12 in Somer, Wisc. NKU (5-0, 1-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference) had a tight-ridden defense allowing only six shots in the game, and only one of them being a shot-on-the-goal save by sophomore goalkeeper Micheal Lavric.

For the third time in the school's history, the Northern Kentucky University Women's Golf team has won the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament after beating Indianapolis by 10 strokes April 27 at the Kokopelli Golf Course in Marion, Ill. Not only did the team win the tournament, but junior Sofie Rasmussen finished in first place individually, edging out Indianapolis' Sarah Prascsak by one stroke.

The Lady Norse Softball team split a double-header with the University of Indianapolis April 13 at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field at Northern Kentucky University. In the first game, NKU (15-21, 6-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference) pulled ahead of the Lady Greyhounds (26-19, 12-5 in the GLVC) in the bottom of the fifth, breaking a two-all tie with four runs to propel it to a 6-3 victory.

That's because this Northern Kentucky University sophomore gets fired upon every time he steps on the paintball field. Paintball, where players hunt down one another using CO2-propelled spheres of paint, is one of the more expensive sports.

For the second time in school history, the Northern Kentucky University Women's Basketball team are the National Champions in Division II, knocking off South Dakota 63-58, March 29 in Kearney, Neb. The game was a nationally televised game on ESPN 2, seeing the Norse come-from-behind to pull off the upset and being crowned national champs, snapping South Dakota's 31-game winning streak, according to NKU Sports Information Web site.

The Northern Kentucky University Women's Basketball team is in the Elite Eight after knocking off Missouri-S'T 60-52, March 17 in Springfield, Mo. This year the Norse had to fight early in the tournament and knock off the No.1 seed Drury on its home court, 84-65 March 15, to advance to play Missouri-S'T.

Holmes wins award

For some, when their playing days are over, credit for their play ends with it. For senior volleyball player Liz Holmes, the awards keep coming. The NCAA awarded Holmes with a $7,500 post-graduate scholarship. The NCAA awarded 58 post-graduate scholarships to 29 men and 29 women who participated in fall sports, according to a Northern Kentucky University Sports Information press release.

The Norse (21-7) were rewarded with a home game as they faced Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville (17-11), defeating the Cougars 68-56.

The game started in quick fashion as the Norse jumped out to a 38-17 lead with 4:49 remaining in the first half.

The road was a difficult one for the Northern Kentucky University Women's Basketball team as it dropped away games to Bellarmine 73-60, Feb. 19 and to Kentucky Wesleyan 74-66, Feb. 21. The two losses dropped NKU (18-7, 11-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference) into a three-way tie for first place with Indianapolis and Bellarmine.

Over the last 36 years Regents Hall has helped make more than a few memories on the court. But the Northern Kentucky University Women and Men's Basketball teams made their last memories there as they played Indianapolis Feb. 16. With 3:56 left in the second half of the women's game, the scoreboard and front lobby lost power, with NKU leading at 60-57.

The Northern Kentucky University Women's Basketball team couldn't have come home at a better time as the Norse knocked off Lewis 73-42, Jan. 31 and Wisconsin-Parkside 73-55, Feb. 2 at Regents Hall. The Norse bounced back from last week's losing road trip in Missouri with a blowout show over the Flyers, due to the performances of junior forward Cassie Brannen and senior center Angela Healy.
