  1. NKU cuts only German lecturer by Mildred Nguyen and Braden White | April 6, 2023

The Department of World Languages and Literature announced it would not renew its contract with Dr. Andrea Fieler, the only remaining full-time lecturer in the German program, at the end of the spring semester. The announcement prompted a whirlwind of confusion, concern and rumors as faculty and students sought to make sense of the situation, as well as what would happen to NKU’s already declining language programs.

  1. Police cars swarm University Drive on first day of classes by Emily Sisk and Killian Baarlaer | Aug. 21, 2023

NKU’s first day of classes in the fall of 2023 was scrambled by a suspicious package found on University Drive. Several police cars responded to the scene, a campus-wide safety alert was sent out and the news became the talk of the campus for the day.

  1. Decomposed human remains found behind NKU soccer stadium by Emily Sisk and Braden White | March 12, 2023

The campus community was rattled by the discovery of decomposed human remains found in a wooded area behind the soccer stadium. Upon the news, The Northerner went on site, finding what appeared to be the remains covered with a white sheet and laying on a stretcher. The discovery happened on the same day as a watch party at Truist Arena for the NKU men’s basketball team’s NCAA drawing. Later news revealed that the remains were potentially at the site for several years, sending the community into further shock.

  1. Everything we know about VP Eddie Howard’s departure from NKU so far by Braden White, Mildred Nguyen, Emily Sisk and Killian Baarlaer | May 18, 2023

An investigation by The Northerner detailed events leading up to the departure of former Vice President of Student Affairs Eddie Howard from NKU. The Northerner had been investigating complaints regarding the conduct of Howard for months prior to his departure. Details of open records requests and past allegations were included.

  1. NKU professor killed in motorcycle accident by Emily Sisk | June 14, 2023

During the quiet days of summer, news broke that Dr. Holly Michelle Deeley Wilhite, a part-time communications professor, died in a motorcycle accident. The professor was rear-ended in Cincinnati while riding with her boyfriend. The university mourned her passing and commemorated who she was outside of NKU.

18 days after the discovery of human remains on NKU’s campus, the individual was identified as Gary Randall. Randall had no known affiliation to NKU.

A compelling profile of men’s basketball freshman Jeramiah Israel tracked the local recruit’s tumultuous path to a Division I basketball scholarship at NKU.

  1. NKU student in critical condition after ‘potential murder-suicide’ of family in New Richmond, Ohio by Emily Sisk | Feb. 28, 2023

Tragedy struck the home of NKU student Samantha Cain as she and four family members became victims of a murder-suicide. Clermont County Sheriff’s Office detailed that four of Samantha’s closest family members, including her 13-year-old brother, were shot and killed inside the home. Samantha was also shot, but she survived and spent many days in critical condition at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

  1. Samantha Cain: Spotlight on survivorship by Emily Sisk | March 31, 2023

One month after Samantha Cain’s survival of a murder-suicide in her New Richmond home, The Northerner spoke with three close friends of Samantha. Focusing on who the bubbly NKU student is, the friends told of her journey from middle school to college to recuperation in the hospital. Samantha was released from the hospital following publication and her GoFundMe account has raised nearly $45,000.

  1. Revival comes to NKU as extension of Asbury movement by Emily Sisk | Feb. 17, 2023

A Christian revival stemming from Kentucky’s Asbury University found a movement on NKU’s campus in February. Aided by students from campus ministries like College Life and the Baptist Campus Ministry, the event took place near Loch Norse and saw 15 individuals baptized. The story quickly rose to the top of The Northerner’s social media and website. Live outdoor worship on the amphitheater steps and other events subsequently took place.
