The air is warm and the sun is shining—perfect weather for an outdoor concert at Loch Norse that draws students and community members alike to campus on a Saturday afternoon. Black, yellow and white balloons line the sidewalk, along with chalk art, leading visitors from a do-it-yourself screen printing station to the live performances of Broadway songs, musical theatre previews, jazz ensembles and rhythm and blues groups.

BLINK, a free, light-based art festival, is easily the biggest event in Cincinnati. The inaugural BLINK in 2017 drew more than a million people to the Queen City—almost 400,000 more than Oktoberfest Zinzinnati. After the roaring success of the festival’s first year, Brad McCombs, associate professor of art and music program head, knew that NKU’s School of the Arts had to get involved somehow.

In the School of the Arts’ newest gallery, “Homecoming”, Hollis Hammonds imbues her past in her art, telling the story of her upbringing in Independence, KY. Hammonds, a 1998 NKU graduate and current Chair of Visual Studies at St. Edward’s University, wanted to highlight the shared American experience to hold onto objects and how the things we keep resonates meaning in others.
