KY colleges to double enrollment

The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education unveiled a plan last month to increase Kentucky's number of college graduates. Called Double the Numbers, the plan was the result of the 1997 Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act, which states that to raise Kentucky's standard of living and quality of life to the national average by 2020, educational attainment must be increased.

From more green space to more sidewalks, students voiced their opinions on changes the university should implement during the next 10 years. The Northern Kentucky University Master Planning team held its first open forum Oct. 24 to examine the school through the eyes of its students.

Regents pass campus safety plan

The Board of Regents approved a plan Sept. 12 to improve the security of Northern Kentucky University's campus through multiple means of communication to students. The recommendations will be shared with President James Votruba, who will then decide whether or not to approve them.

Dedication honors former president

Members of the community gathered outside Norse Commons April 23 to celebrate the renaming of the residential village and honor a former Northern Kentucky University president. Leon E. Boothe, president of NKU from 1983-1996, was honored for spurring the growth of the campus community.

Stem cell lecture cites religion

Even though he was asked beforehand to omit it, religious figure Dr. David Menton still cited a Bible verse at the end of his stem cell research presentation April 11, sponsored by the Student Nurses Organization. The lecture left some baffled as to whether Menton's logic was fact or opinion.

Learning Assistance Program expands

It is now a part of the Associate Provost for Student Success Office and have added the Developmental Mathematics Program to its repertoire. The Northern Kentucky University Wellness group addressed these and several other questions during the Heart Health Month wrap up Feb. 26. Display tables will feature a variety of common grocery store products and provide helpful information, healthy recipes, coupons and taste samplings.

Alliance to lobby gay rights in Frankfort

The Kentucky Fairness Alliance will gather in Frankfort Feb. 22 for an organized day of gay-rights-support called "Kentuckians Value Fairness." Wes Wright, community organizer and legislative liaison for the Kentucky Fairness Alliance and a 1984 graduate of NKU will be leading the protests of House Bill 215, dubbed the Anti-Fairness Bill by the alliance.
