My hair almost turned white after reading a student quote in the Sept. 4 edition of the Northerner. "Yes, after what they did to the United States we should blow them away," is what one student said after being asked the question, "should the United States invade Iraq?" Now I must ask this student and everyone else here at NKU one question myself.

Ceremony memorializes Sept.11

We are a people who, when confronted by challenge, always seem to stand up, never stand aside, Northern Kentucky University President Dr. James Votruba said at a campus memorial ceremony on the one year anniverary of Sept. 11. NKU students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members gathered outside the Steely Library to remember the innocent victims of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania attacks.

North Poll question inappropriate

I am writing in regards to the topic of the North Poll in the Sept. 4 issue of the Northerner and how completely inappropriate it was as a choice for an open ended question. The question is not one that can be answered in a mere sentence or two, and by asking it in this manner you managed to trivialize the very serious nature of the question.

SGA votes to renovate fitness center

The Student Government Association designated the renovation of the Campus Recreation Center their number one priority for the 2002-2003 academic year, at their Sept. 9 meeting. By unanimous vote, the SGA agreed to use funds from the Student Union Reserve Fund to finance the project.

Swipe-Card protects campus

Visitors to the new Natural Science Center may notice a small box on various doors throughout the facility. This box, a magnetic-stripe card reader, is part of the new swipe-card system on campus. Currently in place in limited use at the Natural Science Center, the swipe-card system allows the Department of Public Safety to prevent unauthorized access and to monitor access by persons inside the facility.

TKE Party

Scott Houp, a TKE chapter advisor, and Eric Surder, a third year pledge, sit back and have a soda at one of the many display tables at this years Safe Sex Party. Display tables were decorated in condoms and lubricant. "[We are] trying to promote safe sex in general whether it be abstinence, contraceptive use, or any other safe practice," said Andy Carr, the philanthropy chair for community awareness.

NKU stuns No. 1 Christian Brothers

The NKU women's soccer team remained unbeaten on Sunday with their biggest win of the season, 1-0 over Christian Brothers University. Christian Brothers was ranked No. 1 in the nation coming into the game. Junior forward Aisling Callaghan scored on a penalty kick at the 82:32 mark in the second half to give the Norse the victory.
