NKU senior Rianna Gayheart is greated by Coach Dawn Plitzuweit during senior night festivities at BB&T Arena. Plitzuweit was hired by South Dakota Friday.

NKU women’s basketball coach Dawn Plitzuweit was named head coach at the University of South Dakota this morning.

According to USD Athletic Director David Herbster, Plitzuweit will be introduced as head coach April 25.

Plitzuweit led NKU through its four transition years going from Division II to Division I college basketball. She compiled a 71-54 record over those four years, leading the Norse to a 71-54 record and four appearances in the Women’s Basketball Invitational.

In total, Plitzuweit has a record of 188-93 in nine seasons as a head coach.

“I’d like to thank Dawn for all that she has done for our student-athletes and NKU,” said Ken Bothof, Director of Athletics, in a release. “I wish her nothing but the best in her new role.”

Bothof said in a press release this morning that a national search for Plitzuweit’s replacement will begin immediately.

“We have a great opportunity to hire the next coach for a program that has posted 33-consecutive winning seasons ,” Bothof said. “Our commitment to the success of our women’s basketball program has never been greater. We have and will continue to provide our program with the resources necessary to be successful in the Horizon League and Division I landscape.”
