Beginning November 1, college athletes and athletic department staff can now legally bet on professional sports in states where it is permitted.
Kentucky legalized sports gambling in September 2023 for individuals over the age of 21.
The NCAA still prohibits athletes from betting on college sports and sharing information about college competitions with anyone engaging in sports betting.
Sports betting-related advertisements and sponsorships will continue to be prohibited at NCAA championships.
Previously, student-athletes and athletic department staff were prohibited from betting on any sport governed by the NCAA at any level. For example, because the NCAA oversees basketball and football, betting on the NBA and NFL was not allowed. The only sports that were allowed to be wagered on were horse racing, boxing, MMA and cricket.
The Division I Administrative Committee was the first to pass the proposal, with the Division II Committee and Division III Committee following suit.
This change comes as we have seen an increase in those participating in sports betting. Research conducted by the NCAA found that 67% of college students living on campus engage in sports betting. The NCAA hopes that by allowing student-athletes to bet on professional sports that those who are struggling with gambling issues will feel more empowered to speak up and seek help.
“This harm-reduction approach gives schools an opportunity to help student-athletes make informed decisions, prevent risky behavior, and seek support without fear of impacting their eligibility.” Said Dr. Deena Casiero, NCAA chief medical officer.
“The NCAA will continue to collaborate with schools to help them provide student-athletes with meaningful education and other resources.”
The NCAA remains committed to protecting the integrity and fairness of college competitions and will continue to investigate any sports betting behavior that may have an impact.
