Early in the eighth minute of the women’s soccer game against Oakland, the Norse got a breakaway. Meghan Belrose started the play as she took the ball from the Oakland player. She pushed it up the pitch, passing a through ball to Emilie Doersching.
Doersching, spirited for the ball, made a move splitting the defender, then crossed it into the box. The ball passed to Megan Molner. With one touch, she hit it, and the ball jammed right into the top right of the net.
NKU went up 1-0 and never retreated. They tacked on three more goals, cruising to the 4-0 victory over Oakland, moving NKU’s record to 4-1-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Molner was at the helm for the Norse; in her 63 minutes of play, she recorded a goal, an assist, and two shots. Her goal marked the sixth of the season. Her assist was to Lilly Yordy, who put in a goal just 90 seconds into the second half. It marked her fourth goal of the year, and she leads the Horizon League in total points with 15.
The second half was where it opened up for the Norse; they scored three goals to close out the game, and their defense held Oakland to two shots.
In the 63rd minute, the ball was in Oakland territory, the ball was passed around, and a shot by the Norse was batted out and brought down by an Oakland player, but she mishandled the ball and went right into Oakland’s goal, rewarding the Norse with an own goal and the 3-0 lead.
Oakland’s defense struggled; they let NKU take 14 shots, 10 coming in the second half, ending with a total of seven shots on goal. Their offense also struggled against NKU’s defense as they had six shots, with two being on goal.
Natalie Newman put the cherry on top in the final minutes, scoring her second goal of the season in the 85th minute. Shannon Crogan and Avery Mueller assisted Newman.
NKU goalkeeper Megan Gessner picked up another clean sheet, her fourth of the season. She had a pair of saves, in the 23rd and 24th minute.
