Previous week recap:
Thursday, Aug. 21
Women’s soccer picked up their first win of the season at home against Austin Peay in dominant fashion, 4-0. Megan Molner opened the scoring off a set piece in the 11th minute. Lilly Yordy assisted Molner as she put the power behind her header into the near corner of the net. Molner struck once again two minutes later, she was played in by a through ball from Yordy, as they connected for their second goal and assist of the game. Yordy finally got her shot on goal off a penalty kick in the 55th minute. The Norse put the nail in the coffin as Emilie Doersching scored one last time in the 67th minute. NKU dominated every aspect of the match, winning the shot battle 22-13 (8-4) and the corner battle 7-4.
Men’s soccer was up right after the women got their first win of the season at home against Union Commonwealth (Ky.), 2-1. Union took the lead in the 14th minute and held that score until the 69th minute, when the Norse received a penalty call. Junior forward Ali Taleb stepped up to the spot and calmly buried the ball into the bottom left corner, leveling the game at one a piece. The Norse continued to pressure Union on both ends of the pitch. The final whistle was just seconds away when Jason Purks whipped in a ball to Ibrahim Piracha on the other side of the box, he headed it down to Maddox Behnfeldt in the box, who was able to gather the ball and calmly finish the game-winner. NKU pressured Union holding a one-goal advantage, outshooting the Bulldogs, 22-6 (9-3 on goal) and winning the corner battle 8-0.
Sunday, Aug. 24
Men’s soccer lost their first road battle of the season against number 21 ranked Akron, 1-0. The Norse and the Zips held strong for 56th minutes, as NKU lost the first half shot battle 6-4 and the corner battle 2-1. But in the 56th Akron jumped on the board, which ended up being the only goal of the night. NKU’s defender Joshua Cline was sent off in the 65th minute on a second yellow card. The Norse didn’t record a single shot in the second half, as Akron’s defense was too much for them to handle.
Women’s soccer wins once again in dominant fashion against Mount St. Joseph 6-0. Kylie Anderson was the first to put up on the board just two minutes into the game. Anderson headed in a corner kick from Lilly Yordy, then just ten minutes later the pair did it again, as Anderson headed in another corner from Yordy. The Norse came out of halftime rolling, they scored three goals before the 60-minute mark. First it was Riley Evans, who knocked one in from outside the box after the ball came to her off a deflection. Next was Megan Molner, who scored her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Yordy and Alyssa Carnes. Lastly, was Erykah Cornett, she put in her first goal of the season to make it 5-0. NKU wasn’t finished yet, in the 83rd minute Shannon Crogan set up freshman Gabi Signorino, as she scored her first career goal.
