Taylor Spaulding passes the ball to a teammate. The Norse won 1-0 against MSU

The NKU Women’s soccer team won their home opener and their first game of the season Monday night against Morehead State 1-0. The Norse improve to 1-3 on the season while MSU drops to 1-2.

“Starting the season 0-3 was challenging but our spirit was great, the work ethic was great and the senior leadership was fantastic,” said Head Coach Bob Sheehan. “We have a lot of really great pieces but it just didn’t come together in the first 3 games but we are thrilled to have gotten a win tonight.”

The NKU offense came alive in this game, after being shutout in each of their last two games. The Norse outshot the Eagles 15-6 and also had the advantage in corner kicks 7-5. Jessica Frey lead the Norse with four shots with three shots on goal.

Freshman Ally Perkins and seniors Aubrey Muench and Katelyn Newton also recorded multiple shots for the Norse.

The Norse also kept the Eagle offense away from the goal, only allowing one shot on goal, which was saved by Emily Lohmann.

In the 19th minute, senior midfielder Katelyn Newton scored her first goal of the season, after her shot deflected off a defender and into the net.

“Katelyn had a great goal and she stayed with it and put back a missed shot.” Sheehan said.

Right after halftime the Eagles had a chance to tie the game up with a penalty kick but Emily Lohmann made a great diving save on the ball.

“My left side is my strong side so I picked it and went for it and got lucky” Lohmann said.

The Norse will play their next four games on the road, starting on Friday when they play Toledo. They will then play Xavier and Vanderbilt before beginning Horizon League play against Green Bay.
