Tyler White (3) led NKU with 23 points in the Norse’s loss to Milwaukee in the first round of the Horizon League tournament.

FAIRBORN, Ohio — A game-tying three-point attempt hit the back iron and bounced out Saturday evening as Northern Kentucky lost to Wright State 67-64.

NKU found itself down 10 with 6:50 remaining. The Norse mounted a comeback that almost forced the game to overtime.

When Tyler White converted on a four-point play with 6:00 remaining, the Norse deficit was down to four, 60-56.

Drew McDonald’s free throw with 1:31 remaining pulled the Norse within 65-62. White knocked down two more free throws with 44 seconds left to pull NKU within one.

NKU gave itself a chance when Jake Giesler came up with a steal on the next Raider possession. However, Wright State’s Joe Thomasson stripped White at the other end and was fouled with six seconds left.

Thomasson made both free throws to give the Raiders a 67-64 lead.

After advancing the ball to half court and taking a timeout with 2.8 seconds left, Northern Kentucky had a chance to tie. However, White’s three-point attempt was just off as the horn sounded.

White led NKU with 21 points. McDonald and Cole Murray each had 11 points.

Michael Karena led Wright State with 17 points. Grant Benzinger added 16 points while Thomasson had 10.

NKU continues its three-game, regular season-ending road trip 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Cleveland State. The game will be televised by ESPN3 and Time Warner Cable Sports Channel.
