Norse down Detroit for third win in four games

DETROIT, Michigan — The NKU men’s basketball team picked up its third win in its last four games Friday with a 91-83 victory against Detroit.

NKU (8-12 overall, 4-5 in Horizon League) trailed at the half by one, and trailed by five, 55-50, with 14:43 remaining.

The Norse surged ahead thanks to a three by Deontae Cole and a three-point play by Brennan Gillis. The lead went back and forth over the next nine minutes of play.

With the game tied at 76, Cole Murray hit a three to give NKU a three-point lead with 5:12 remaining. A basket by Jake Giesler and another Murray three pushed the Norse advantage to 84-78 with 3:26 remaining.

Detroit (9-11, 3-6) tried to hang around. A Jaleel Hogan jumper with 1:26 remaining pulled the Titans within four, 86-82.

Drew McDonald closed the game at the free throw line by knocking down five in the final 1:26. On the night, he made 13 of 14 from the line.

Murray made seven threes on the night and finished as the leading scorer with 25 points. McDonald added 17 and 10 rebounds. Jalen Billups and Tyler White each had 14 points.

Detroit was paced by Hogan who had 17 points. Josh McFolley added 15 points.

In its first season in the always-tough Horizon League, this recent stretch has propelled the Norse into a tie for sixth in the 10-team conference.

NKU returns home 7 p.m. Monday to take on Oakland. The Norse defeated the Grizzlies Jan. 19 90-73 in Rochester, Michigan.
