Softball

The Northern Kentucky University softball team went 3-1 over the weekend. On March 31, the Norse split a doubleheader with Wisconsin Parkside. NKU cruised to an 11-2 victory, including a six-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by sophomore Kari Lang. The second game was a different outcome as the Norse were shutout, 3-0. The Norse swept a doubleheader against Lewis on April 1 with late inning heroics. Lang hit a solo home run in the seventh and final inning that proved to be enough to win, 1-0. In the second game, the Norse scored five runs in the seventh inning on a pair of home runs by sophomore Natalie Papi and freshman Kaylin Steinmetz to come back from a three-run deficit and to win the game, 5-3.

Tennis

The Northern Kentucky University tennis teams were in action against Southern Indiana on March 31. The men’s team lost, 6-3, while the women’s team won, 6-3. Junior Guillaume Berman and freshman Drew Schroeder won the only doubles match for the men while junior Andre Correa and senior Tyler Fraser won their singles matches, both in three sets. The women’s team won two doubles matches and four single matches. Senior Whitney Thomas and sophomore Marta Romeo won the No. 2 doubles match, while seniors Jenny Hand and Jillian Sturgeon won the No. 3 doubles match. All four were winners in their single matches.

Track and Field

The track and field teams competed in the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational, hosted by the University of Cincinnati, on March 31. Junior Brendan Chwalek highlighted the weekend by posting a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Chwalek finished fourth, losing only to Division 1 runners, with a time of 9:14.08, the sixth-fastest time among all NCAA Division II runners this season. Junior Kayla Justice finished sixth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:44.06. Justice’s time was her best on the season and is the fastest among Great Lakes Valley Conference runners this season.
