Beginning this edition, Assistant News Editor Ella Rose Johnston and Reporter Lura Becker took a deep dive into the complex web of all things campus safety in this feature story. They look into campus crime statistics, on-campus safety measures and what the university is working towards in the realm of campus safety.
Next up, photo editor Amy Straman has compiled a visually intriguing and practical photo essay of five of the most useful student resources around campus. From free food to free transportation, Amy highlighted some of the most helpful places around campus for all students.
For the foodie readers, Contributor Elijah Dean has put together an article on some of the best spots to eat within just a few miles of NKU, a guide for anyone looking to discover a new favorite place to eat.
For our cover story, the Northerner editorial board had the chance to sit down with NKU president Cady Short-Thompson for the third year running. In this in-depth Q&A session, she outlined goals for the university, reflected on her presidency as she enters her third year in the position and discussed the importance of community on NKU’s campus. “I think we’re in good shape right now,” she told us.
“I want to get in amazing, fabulous shape in the next three years, in all the ways the plan spells out. Then I really do think we can become distinct, known for core strengths and new directions. It’s exciting.”
From the sports desk, Sports Editor Jakob Staley and Assistant Sports Editor Jonah Moore were able to tell four unique stories from four coaches of various athletic programs at NKU. Staley and Moore spoke to both fresh-faced, recently hired coaches, as well as long-tenured stalwart leaders of programs who have cemented themselves in the canon of NKU sports. Not only did they dive into the stats, but also the faces behind these teams.
Finishing off our edition strong are two great back-page pieces that will prepare you for the excitement of upcoming events. Firstly, Arts & Life editor Ella Rinehard laid out the entire upcoming School of the Arts production schedule for the 2025-26 Theater & Dance season. From classic musicals to hard-hitting drama, Ella covers all the productions coming to NKU this year.
In a different kind of season preview, Assistant Sports Editor Jonah Moore goes over all the offseason buzz and what to expect from the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2025-26 NFL season. Moore looks into contract negotiations, offseason happenings and the Bengals’ playoff hopes in this preview of what is to come for the team.
