SGA: No more riding dirty

Riding dirty is the opposite idea of the Northern Kentucky University Student Government Association’s newest proposed legislation set to be considered at the Nov.  1 meeting. Two freshmen senators, John Jose and Eric Pederson, have teamed together to write a resolution asking the University to encourage students to be cleaner in their travels throughout the region by going green (and saving green) by carpooling.  This is only the second resolution to be considered thus far by the SGA this semester. Pete Trentacoste, director of University Housing, will also present at the meeting about their needs and issues of student concern. SGA senators are also expected to finalize a proposed survey on library operating hour preferences for the student body.

Meetings are held on the first floor of the Student Union in the Governance Room every Wednesday at 3:30 and are open to the public. Each meeting begins with an open session where any person can address the governing body with concerns.

Here is the text of the resolution being considered (sic):

“NORTHERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY, HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KENTUCKY, TO
PROPOSE THE CREATION OF A RIDE SHARE BOARD TO INCREASE USEFUL
REASOURCES AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS ON CAMPUS AND DECREASE THE
UNIVERSITIES CARBON FOOTPRINT ON THE ENVIROMENT

WHEREAS: 86% of NKU students commute to campus on a daily basis, and

WHEREAS: In 2009 42% of NKU’s carbon footprint (approximately 67,525 metric tons of
CO2 equivalent) was attributed to student commuting activities, and

WHEREAS: A ride share board would open an opportunity for students to save money and help
preserve the environment, and

WHEREAS: In accordance with President Votruba’s and SGA 2010-2011 yearly goals (stated
at the August 31 SGA meeting) to pursue the NKU “Go Green” initiative, and

WHEREAS: NKU is a signatory to the American College and University Presidents Climate
Commitment, and

WHEREAS: Signatories to the ACUPCC commit to working towards climate neutrality by a
predetermined date,

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, on this ____ of _______, that the Student Government
Association recommends the creation of a ride share board to aid commuting students and
improve the environment.
