Norse escape past Bobcats in overtime

The Northern Kentucky University Men’s Soccer team started another season off with a bang. The Norse (1-0) came back to defeat the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats 2-1 in a marathon game that went into double overtime.

The game was scoreless with four minutes remaining when the Bobcats (0-1) got on the board with a goal from senior forward Anthony Peters.

The Norse remembered something they had talked about in practice earlier in the week, teams are more vulnerable after they score, and towards the end of the game.Who says? -Cassie Stone 8/30/08 11:41 PM The Norse had both of these working on their side. NKU kept the pressure on and took the ball straight down the field from the face off. Junior midfielder Braden Bishop scored off of a pass from Tony Ray just a minute later to tie the game up for the Norse. The first overtime went by without either team scoring. Just four minutes into the second overtime senior defender Tony Ray notched his second assist of the night when he passed the ball to sophomore forward Steven Beattie, who scored a goal from 25 yards out. Steven Beattie had four shots on the goal Aug. 29.

“Steven was all over the place Friday night, Basaylga said. “He wanted the ball.”

Basalyga also spoke highly of sophomore goalkeeper, Michael Lavric.

“He came up big on a couple of one on one’s,” Basyalga said. “There was a breakaway and if hadn’t stopped it, that would have been the game.”

The Norse out shot the Bobcats 17-7. The Norse also received 17 fouls to the Bobcats 12.

The NKU Men’s Soccer Team will be playing Charleston at noon Aug. 31 at the Town ‘ Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.
