Basketball teams to go retro Feb. 16

The Northern Kentucky University Basketball teams will pull out the retro uniforms to commemorate the final home game at Regents Hall, Feb. 16 against the University of Indianapolis.

The Women’s Basketball Team will tip off the ceremonial night at 4:30 p.m.. the Men’s Basketball game will follow at 7 p.m.

Members of the first Men’s Team from 1971-1972, and the first women’s team, which included head coach Nancy Winstel from the 1974-1975 season, will be in attendance for the game.

The Norse will move to their new home the Bank of Kentucky Center to open the 2008-09 season.

Baseball receives votes in Div. II Poll

The Northern Kentucky University Baseball Team received votes in the NCAA Division II Collegiate Baseball Preseason Poll.

Last season, the Norse began the year ranked No. 21 in Div. II. Tampa University, the two-time defending national champions starts the season on the summit of the national poll. NKU will play a three-game series against the Spartans March 1-2.

Rivals from the Great Lakes Valley Conference that appeared in the poll include Southern Indiana at No. 10 and Southern Illinois at Edwardsville is ranked No. 24.

Last season, NKU finished the year with an overall record of 27-26 and just missed the GLVC Tournament after beginning the season 1-9. The Norse will begin the 2008-09 season Feb. 23 at home against Grand Valley State.

Softball signs two players for 2009

The NKU Softball team signed two recruits for the 2009 season, Jan. 7.

The Norse Softball Team signed Rachel May, senior utility player at Thomas Worthington High School in Westerville, Ohio. May hit .390 and drove in 31 runs batted in for TWHS. She was named an honorable mention All-Metro player in the Columbus area.

Alexa McClasin also signed with NKU to play softball. McCalsin, a senior from Hawesville, Ky., plays all of the outfield positions at Hancock County High School. She batted .367 with four home runs and 41 RBI. McClasin also stole 15 bases for HCHS. She has also played quality defense honing a .989 fielding percentage.

Baseball adds two to 2009 roster

The NKU Baseball team signed two recruits for the 2009 season Jan. 7.

Max Colaner, a senior from Massilon, Ohio, plays all outfield positions at Canton Central Catholic High School. Colaner batted .407 average during his junior season. He has 69 hits in 64 career games and compiled seven triples and 22 RBI last season.

Mike Roe, senior pitcher and first baseman at Madison High School in Middletown, Ohio, was also signed. Roe finished his junior season with a 4-1 record with a 0.49 earned run average. On the hitting part of his repertoire Roe batted .517 with five home runs and 32 RBI.

Norse Hockey Club tops SIUE

The Northern Kentucky University Hockey Club team defeated the Cougars of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville by a score of 8-2., Jan 12 at the Northern Kentucky ice Center.

Norse forward Taylor Dickman led NKU with two goals in the game.

Next for the Norse is a matchup with Xavier University, Jan. 18 at the NKIC.
