Jackie Robinson Day was a great day for baseball as he was honored throughout all levels of the game. It was also a good day for Northern Kentucky University’s Baseball Team on the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball’s color barrier April 15. The ice-cold temperature didn’t stop the hot Norse as it swept Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Quincy University, 4-2 in the first game and 1-0 in the second.

Kenny Wilson was the man at the plate in the opening game going 2-for-3 and scoring a run.

The Norse didn’t bring its bats, but its small-ball tactics worked as two players notched sacrifice flies.

Quincy piled up seven hits as a team but could only push two runs across while NKU could only muster 4 hits, but came out on top of the scoreboard.

Pitcher Matt Marksbury notched another win on his belt, improving his record to a very impressive 6-0.

If the weather cooled the bats of NKU and Quincy in the first game, then they were frozen for the nightcap.

Luckily, pinch-hitter Brian DeCarlo smacked a hit in the seventh inning, scoring third baseman Matt Wagers for the only run of the game. The Norse’s starting pitcher was Josh Bruns in the second game, and he was mowing down Quincy batters like clockwork.

He only gave up two hits, struck out nine batters and didn’t allow a single run in his eight innings on the mound.

Bruns turned the ball over to pitcher Josh Lueke, who closed out the game in the top of the ninth for his first save on the season.

The wins improved NKU’s record to 18-19 overall and 15-9 in the GLVC. The Norse stands alone in fourth place.

NKU’s next game will be against Wilmington College at 7 p.m. on April 19 at Champion Window Field.
