Task force evaluates campus safety

Adding more call boxes and posting the Department of Public Safety’s number throughout Northern Kentucky University’s campus were suggestions made at the state task force meeting that examined campus safety.

NKU hosted an open forum with three members of the Governor’s Task Force on Campus Safety March 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Otto M. Budig Theater. W. Ed Sergeant, associate for the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, Wayne Hall, director of Public Safety at the University of Louisville, and Chairwoman Gail Minger represented the Governor’s Task Force. This forum was one of six that will be held at post-secondary educations institutions across Kentucky during March.

“These forums are held in order to let students and staff voice concerns about security, and suggest solutions to perceived problems,” Sergeant said.

Universities have obligations and responsibilities to safeguard students, faculty and staff on their campuses, Minger said. She also addressed students, stating it is their responsibility to let people know if something is making them uncomfortable.
