Golf prepares for season’s end

The Northern Kentucky University Men’s Golf Team just came off an enormous win against the University of Cincinnati in the 2006 Cross River Shootout Sept. 29.

Now they set a school record of 277, 7-under par Oct. 1 against Bellarmine University at Belterra Golf Course in Vevay, Ind. David Shearer, in a Tiger Woods-esque performance, finished first overall by firing a 4-under par 67.

Shearer shot a 33 on the front nine as his teammate Andrew Jewell countered with a 33 of his own on the back nine. Jewell and Clint Kohls finished second and third respectively in their match against Bellarmine.

In the words of the Hall-of-Famer Marty Brenneman, NKU laid a “good old-fashion butt whoopin'” en route to a 28-stroke victory.

The final result was reminiscent of the 2006 Ryder Cup Tournament where Team Europe just gave it to the Americans.

The Norse’s performance Oct. 1 shattered the 18-hole record from last season when the Norse shot 5 under at Perry Park Golf Course.

The golfers hope their recent success will propel them as they travel to Missouri to compete in the Rivermen Invitational Tournament at Wing Haven Country Club Oct. 9 and 10.

Following the Rivermen Invitational, the Norse will begin preparation for the spring season.
