Women hoopsters win big over Spalding

Blue

On “Nancy Winstel Bobblehead Doll Night” Jan. 25, the Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team defeated the Spalding Lady Pelicans 93-41.

Spalding lead the game early in the first half by a score of 5-4, but later in the half senior guard Elizabeth Burrows made a three point play the old fashioned way to give the women hoopsters a 24-13 lead. This was the first double-digit lead for the Norse in the first half. NKU lead Spalding at halftime by a score of 41-23.

Karmen Graham’s layup as time expired gave the Norse their biggest lead of the game. Graham scored 16 points and had 7 rebounds.

“Once we got established we played a good game,” said NKU women’s basketball coach Nancy Winstel.

“It took us a few minutes to get going, but with Spalding being a non-conference opponent I was able to try a couple of different combinations of players against them.”

The varying combinations allowed Norse starters some time to rest while younger players improved their game.

Freshman Angela Healy grabbed nine rebounds and lead the Norse in scoring with a career high 17 points. Healy made a basket in the first half to increase the Norse lead to 17-13.

The Norse, who improved their record with their win to 11-7 overall, held Spalding to a 29.4 shooting percentage from the field. They also out-rebounded Spalding by 49 to 27.

“With us playing a non-conference opponent, we had to keep our focus because we were playing a different team,” said Winstel. “It was good to play all nine players and have them score.”

Nicole Chiodi, another freshman, also had a big game for the Norse. She scored 8 points and grabbed 6 points in the win.

The win was the Norse sixth consecutive win in the month of January.

This is the fourth straight time that the NKU athletic department has held the bobblehead promotion and second of this year. Earlier this season, there was “Dave Bezold Bobblehead Night.” The promotion has also included the Ken Shields bobblehead and the NKU mascot “Hey U.”
