Event will honor heroes

The Student Government Association will host a Veterans Day celebration at Northern Kentucky University Nov. 11.

U.S. Rep. Ken Lucas, who served as a regent at NKU for 23 years, will deliver the keynote speech to veterans in the community and NKU students, faculty and staff.

SGA Sen. Heather Gilmore, chair of the Student Involvement Committee, lead the initiative for this project and said she is hoping for a large turnout.

“We have our freedom because of veterans that have fought in the war,” Gilmore said. “I think it’s important for college students not to forget.”

Dean of Students Kent Kelso said he believes it is not asking too much for students to give a moment of their time to honor veterans.

“Of all the major recognized national (holidays), this is one that is, in my opinion, absolutely critical to honor and to recognize the sacrifice that these individuals have given for their country and for each one of us.

“And it continues today in the people that are in Iraq and Afghanistan who are fighting terrorism overseas so we don’t have to fight here.”

The event will begin at 11 a.m. and will take place in front of Steely Library.

The Sons of the American Legion Post 275 is cosponsoring the event.
