Hoxworth Blood Center, along with 70 other blood centers from around the country, signed a collaborative agreement with the United States Department of Defense to supplement the military’s blood supply during wartime, if and when additional blood is needed. Currently, the military’s blood supply remains adequate. But since the future needs of the military are unknown, we encourage donors to schedule appointments over the days and weeks to come. It is very important to balance the donations over a longer period of time, in order to meet the current needs of our community and the future needs of the military. If Hoxworth is asked to ship blood, a stable inventory of blood is needed for both the patients in our local hospitals and our troops abroad.

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati Medical Center, is the only community blood center for the Greater Cincinnati area. Serving a 14-county area in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Hoxworth collects, tests, processes and distributes blood and blood components to 24 hospitals. Hoxworth needs to collect blood from 325 volunteer donors each day to meet the demand of area hospitals.

Donating blood is safe and easy. You must be at least 17 years old and in good health. You must weigh at least 110 pounds and bring identification to donate.
