The African Student Union and the International Student Union will provide entertainment for the Brighton center’s ” The Brighton The Night Gala ” fund raiser. Celebrating its 8th year , the gala’s theme will be ” World of Support.” The theme was conceptualized by The Brighton Center’s chairperson , Michelle Class. Going beyond ideas of patriotism and peace she exhibits, ” ..Given the events of the past year , we wanted to have a theme that encompasses the idea of us being not people from different countries but citizens of the world,” explains Class.

The fund raiser will take place April 13 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 12a.m. There will be black tie dinner and dance. A silent auction will be held for such items as condominiums, tickets to Speedway and Reds games, and beauty spa services . The band Soul Pocket will also be offering musical entertainment covering material from the fifties to present.

The African and International Student Unions were suggested for entertainment via NKU faculty that serve on the board . Members include: Matt Shank of the Management and Marketing Department, Gerald Hunter, Vice President, Rachel Vorturba, and Patricia Knox.

Development Director , Peggy A’Hearn , describes the community of support, “The Brighton Center provides social services to a wide diversity of about 36, 000 people . Ranging from children to senior citizens, the center provides assistance with emergency clothing and food services and a runaway shelter for troubled teens . The center has currently 36 different programs.”

One such program is the Young Parent Career Center that works with young parents 16 to 21 years old that receive the Kentucky Temporary Assistance Program ( K-TAP). This service helps young parents acquire their GED and mobilize them into higher education or job placement.

The Family Day Care program is a network of child care providers. Working with children ranging in age from early infants to 12 this service currently has 27 providers in the area.

The Brighton Center also has a subsidiary housing program that assists families and senior citizens with affordable housing within the Northern Kentucky area.

The center was founded in 1966 by Reverend Bill Neuroth. Originally, Brighton Street Center, was started in a small storefront . By 1970, the center became an official United Way agency.
