A new shop opened in August, just minutes from NKU. Ella Oak Boutique offers locally made clothes, accessories and other handmade items that highlight community.
“Ella Oak Boutique was really inspired by our mother, Ella, and it’s named after her,” said Karen Leming, the shop’s owner. “And the oak because of the oak tree—its strength, endurance and deep roots—that’s who we are as a family, and that’s who we are in our faith.”
For years, Leming has been shopping at boutiques with her sister Jodi Stewart. When a space in Cold Spring became available in November 2024, Leming decided to start her own boutique in honor of their late mother.
“Our mother was a little fashionista,” Stewart said. “I’ve just basically been a cheerleader. [Leming] had the vision.”
Leming and her husband spent months renovating the space, adding ornate touches such as customized chandeliers and wooden signs. From $8 leggings to Flying Monkey Jeans, the shop offers a diverse range of women’s clothing at various price points.
Aside from affordable clothing, Leming also recognizes the value of shopping locally. The shelves are filled with goods from local artists and vendors, including felt soaps, candles, sea glass and ceramic bracelets.
“We love that boutiques offer unique items, and they’re not in mass quantities,” Leming said. “We’re all about building a sense of community with our shoppers.”
Leming’s favorite part of starting her business has been meeting new people. Since its grand opening on Aug. 16, the shop has already seen repeat visitors.
“In a very short week, the support that we’ve received has just been phenomenal,” Leming said. “We could not have asked for a better place to be.”
