Colombiano Ams said the election results have shaped how some people from his country view America.
An NKU student from the west African country of Benin, Ams said some of his friends from Africa that had considered coming to America are having second thoughts.
“They’re afraid of the situation,” Ams said.
Ams, a senior computer information technology major, said the outcome has also had an impact on some international students, as some of his friends studying in America have expressed that they’re going to leave.
He was with his American friends watching the election results roll in.
“I laughed because I thought it was really funny that Trump would win,” Ams said. “Then I started to wonder what’s going to happen to the country because of all the things he said.”

Initially, Ams said he had a lot of interest in the election. He said he was drawn to Bernie Sanders in particular.
“I liked the way he talked, his speeches were believable. His speeches were different from every political speeches I’ve ever seen before,” Ams said.
Ams lost interest in the election when he realized that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were the presidential candidates, but he said he became more tuned in on election day.
After the election, he said some of his cousins expressed concern about his safety.
“Because of the racist speeches, because of the racist stuff he was saying,” Ams said. “He’s going to prevent immigrants from coming. I don’t know if he was serious about it, but it’s not good.”
