Common core standards forum set for February
The Council on Postsecondary Education and College Readiness Partnership recently announced plans to co-host a national forum on Common Core Standards next February. Kentucky was the first state in the nation to implement the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics. The forum, to be held in Louisville, Ky., will host higher education leaders and faculty who have contributed to P-20 collaboration around the common core standards.
NKU alumna awarded Teacher Achievement Award
Northern Kentucky University College of Education alumna Kimberly Shearer received the Teacher Achievement Award on Oct. 18. As an English teacher at Boone County High School, Shearer’s work as the school’s writing coordinator and her professional affiliations contributed to her recognition. Shearer will represent Kentucky at 2012 National Teacher of the Year competition.
Virtual program expands thanks to space in Griffin
The Center for Applied Informatics (CAI) recently expanded its virtual co-op program which has almost 60 students working on innovative collaboration projects with organizations worldwide. With the expansion in Griffin Hall, the program has accounted for 100 percent growth since the fall semester began.
Student wins second place in writing competition
Northern Kentucky University senior Joshua McCormick placed second in the Anthropologists and Sociologists of Kentucky student paper competition. His paper, “An Ethno History of Holley Grove, West Virginia, Pertaining to Property Involved in the Paint Creek Mine War of 1912-1913” was a preliminary report that won the award during the weekend of Oct. 21.
Students win second place for best chapter business plan
The Northern Kentucky University Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) attended the CEO National Conference on October 27-29 in Fort Worth Texas. Eight NKU students and advisor Jeff Varrone brought home second place for best chapter business plan. The award was based on the chapter’s vision, mission target markets and more. CEO focuses on helping students learn networking skills and business ideas.
