It appeared the NKU women’s soccer team was on the way to its sixth victory in Horizon League play in as many games Saturday evening at NKU Soccer Stadium.
The Norse led 1-0 in the final six minutes of regulation. However, Kaila Sargema scored twice, once in regulation and once in overtime, as Cleveland State upset the Norse 2-1.
Macy Hamblin scored her sixth of the season in the 62nd minute, this one from the penalty spot, to put NKU up 1-0.
It remained 1-0 until the 85th minute. Sargema scored, assisted by Dani Sowinski, to level the match and send it to overtime.
Sargema would hand the Norse its first Horizon League loss when she scored off of a Ashley Thiss assist in the 110th minute. Just 21 seconds away from a draw, Cleveland State escaped with the 2-1 victory.
NKU (9-4, 5-1 in Horizon League) dominated play, outshooting Cleveland State 36-14, including 10-4 in shots on goal. Hamblin and Jessica Frey had 11 shots each. Hamblin had five on target while Frey had two.
Jamie Daniels was outstanding for CSU (8-6-1, 4-2). She made nine saves and only allowed the penalty kick goal.
The Norse will look to rebound 4 p.m. Wednesday at Oakland. That match will be televised on ESPN3. Saturday, the Norse will play the one team ahead of them in the standings: Milwaukee. That will be an 8 p.m. start in Milwaukee.
