MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Calvin Murphy’s goal in the 64th minute Monday afternoon propelled the Northern Kentucky men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Memphis.

Murphy, a freshman, headed in a Johannes Jansen free kick a little more than an hour into the match. Goalkeeper AJ Fleak made eight saves for his first clean sheet of the season.

The shutout is the 11th of Fleak’s Norse career.

Memphis (0-2-0) outshot NKU (1-1-0) 13-9, getting eight of those shots on goal. NKU managed four shots on target, one of which found the back of the net for the game’s lone goal.

NKU returns to action Friday in the Mayor’s Cup hosted by Hartwick College. The Norse will play Saint Francis (Pa.) 5 p.m. Friday. and Bucknell noon Sunday.

Monday’s game was the second of eight straight on the road to open the season. Northern Kentucky’s home opener is 7 p.m. Sept. 30 against Belmont.
