The good The chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George Bush has called for Guantanamo Bay to be closed, the Associated Press reported Jan. 14. Adm. Mike Mullen cautioned that though others in Bush’s administration have said they favor closing it, it remains open.
The bad Three soldiers were killed in Iraq Jan. 8. The trio had been stationed at Fort Campbell in Southern Kentucky before being sent to Iraq. Their deaths prompted Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear to order all flags at state offices lowered to half mast until sunset on the day of their funerals. Arrangements, however, are still pending.
The weird The Baltic Center for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, U.K., is under attack because of an exhibition containing a statue depicting Jesus Christ with an aroused penis, The Sun reported Jan. 11. The evangelical group Christian Voice has called the statue, one of 74 in a collection called “Gone, Yet Still” by Terence Koh, “blasphemous” and “pornographic.”
