The 11th annual Skyline Chili Meet the Norse Night is to take place Oct. 18 in Regents Hall at Northern Kentucky University and will feature both the men and women basketball teams in intra-squad scrimmages. Skyline Chili will provide free chili three-ways.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have high expectations for the 2006-2007 season. The men, coming off a 17-11 campaign, will look to its four seniors to help lead the way in the upcoming season. Senior Kevin Schappell, returning leading scorer at an average of 11.2 points per game, will play a pivotal role in the success of the Norse because of his experience. He is the lone player on this year’s roster that has played three years of Division II basketball.
University of Dayton transfer James Cripe will provide a much needed inside presence with the departure of Gavin Ludgood.
New Mexico Lobo transfer Anthony Teague, who had a very successful summer in the Deveroe’s League, will use that momentum to propel him into a successful first year with the Norse.
Coach Dave Bezold will count on a number of underclassmen to help the Norse to a Great Lakes Valley Conference championship. A number of the underclassmen will be sophomore guards Mike Kimmey, Scott Bibbins and David McFarland.
The men will open its season Nov. 1 in an exhibition game against the University of Cincinnati.
The women will look for its second consecutive GLVC championship. Expectations are enormous for Coach Nancy Winstel’s squad as it returns all five starters from last year’s team including senior Karmen Graham, who averaged 14.3 points per game. Graham was also named first team All-GLVC by the league coaches.
Senior Karyn Creager, one of the top free-throw shooters in the nation, will make a huge impact this year and will challenge for All-GLVC honors this season.
Senior Brittany Winner is one to watch as she was named Most Valuable Player in the GLVC tournament last year. The women will open its season Nov. 1 in an exhibition game against the University of Kentucky.
