The Northern Kentucky Norse men’s basketball team was out-hustled and out-played on Sunday afternoon, as the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames came into BB&T Arena and handed the Norse a crushing 73-43 defeat.
The Norse pulled the curtains on homecoming week with a victory over the Detroit Mercy Titans at the BB&T Arena Saturday night in front of a crowd of 6,231, including 1,173 students.
The 17-7 homecoming-Norse came out victorious with their fourth straight win with a final score of 84-65 over the 6-18 Titans. NKU remains second in conference trailing Wright State after a 9-1 run in their last 10 games.
The Northern Kentucky Men’s basketball team tamed the Oakland Grizzlies Thursday night. The Black and Gold won by a score of 73-70. The win was the third in a row for the Norse as they improved to 17-7 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
Cole Murray, a 2017 graduate and men’s basketball star, had his jersey retired by his high school on Jan. 25. Murray was instrumental in NKU’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament and graduated with 259 career 3-pointers and scored a total of 930 points.
NKU basketball is on a roll right now. For the first time in the program’s Division I NCAA history, the women’s team is tied for second in the Horizon League, coming off a win streak of four. The men’s team now has their whole roster playing together at full health, are tied for second and are on a two-game winning streak. Friday nights match up at Nutter Center ended in the Wright State Raiders favor with a whopping 32 point win. NKU now falls to 14-7 on the season and 6-3 in the conference. Wright State advances to 18-4 overall and 8-1 in the Horizon League, only falling to UIC 76-72.
Wright State University (WSU) and Northern Kentucky University (NKU) hold the most intense rivalry in the Horizon League, starting in 2015 when NKU joined the league. NKU and WSU have fought back and forth for years, taking turns earning Horizon League titles and going to the NCAA championships. This intense, long-term rivalry began in July of 2015 when it was announced that NKU would be joining the Horizon League.
