Newest SOTA play details first African-American theatre company

Forty years before the Civil War in New York City, William Henry Brown made the controversial decision to have his African-American theatre company put on a performance of Shakespeare’s “Richard III” at the same time as the rival Park Theatre. Opening on Sept. 26, the School of the Arts’ theatre department will be performing “The African Company Presents Richard III,” a dramatization of this historical event.

In the School of the Arts’ newest gallery, “Homecoming”, Hollis Hammonds imbues her past in her art, telling the story of her upbringing in Independence, KY. Hammonds, a 1998 NKU graduate and current Chair of Visual Studies at St. Edward’s University, wanted to highlight the shared American experience to hold onto objects and how the things we keep resonates meaning in others.
