New and returning students alike can kick off the school year by attending any one of the exciting events that will take place during Victorfest.
Victorfest is NKU’s weeklong schedule of events beginning August 16th that is meant to spread school spirit to everyone. Grab your mustaches and start hashtagging #stachtag, because this year there is even more to look forward to during welcome week.
Victorfest begins after first-year students have officially moved in with an opening night concert by Bad Veins, an indie pop band hailing from Cincinnati, at 8:30 p.m.
Leah Kelly, Activities Programming Board (APB) advisor, is looking forward to this new event.
“Opening night concert is something fun and new and we are excited to see the students attend and engage with one another,” Kelly said.
Students are encouraged to attend the new student convocation at 3:30 p.m. at the Bank of Kentucky Center.
Immediately following will be the tailgate party at the Bank of Kentucky Center parking lot. Sarah Aikman, director of the Student Union, promises lots of fun.
“The tailgate will be a blast,” said Aikman. “Students can eat, listen to live music from bands featuring faculty members and just hang out.”
The night ends with the UK vs. NKU soccer game at 7 p.m. at soccer stadium.
APB will host the outdoor movie at dusk. This year’s feature will be “Neighbors” starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron.
According to Kelly, the movie is meant to be light hearted and entertaining for all students.
“APB has decided to choose a comedy that will hopefully have everyone laughing,” Kelly said.
Back by popular demand is Hypnotist Dale K. Students who wish to see the show at either 7 or 9 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom must get a ticket beforehand. The tickets are free when students bring their All Card. Tickets are available at the Student Union Information Desk on the second-floor.
Kelly says that Dale K. has been a highlight of the week ever since he first performed at NKU.
“He has been here for a couple of years now, and each year there has been great attendance to the shows,” Kelly said. “Honestly, it is neat to see him perform.”
The Service Leadership fair starts at 10 a.m. and lasts until 2 p.m. It is located on second-floor of the Student Union. According to Aikman, it is a helpful tool for those students who wish to obtain a leadership position.
“There will be door prizes, food and all that jazz,” Aikman stated. “However, it will be really beneficial for students who are interested in becoming a leader.”
Rock n’ Jock, the final event of the night, will be held at the sand volleyball courts in the Residential Village at 7:30 p.m. The event is designed for new students to learn more about Greek life at NKU.
Comedian Tracey Ashley will headline A Night of Comedy in the Student Union Ballroom at 7 p.m.
Joseph Smith, a junior political science major and executive director of APB, is excited to see Ashley perform.
“I had the opportunity to see her present at the National Association for Campus Activities this past spring,” Smith said. “After seeing the performance, I knew that she would be able to connect with our campus and give everyone a good laugh.”
Judson Laipply, of YouTube fame, will speak to freshman at 3 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
According to Aikman, this event is an exciting way to inform new students.
“He is going to attempt to pump up the freshman, so that they are eager to begin this new chapter of their life,” said Aikman.
Lastly, Fresh Fusion will begin at 4 p.m. at the Loch Norse Plaza. Students who attend will learn about nearly all clubs and organizations on campus.
The first Day of Service, an event which students can volunteer to do community service, will begin at noon and end at 4 p.m.
Aikman urges all students to attend events during Victorfest.
“It gives students the opportunity to find out what is going on at NKU, and what this university has to offer,” explained Aikman. “Victorfest allows everyone to experience NKU’s lively atmosphere.”
