Northern Kentucky University Board of Regents voted May 5 for the university to stop providing students who take 17 or more credit hours with a 50 percent discount as well as raise tuition by nearly 5 percent for resident undergraduate students starting fall 2010. Full story

Finding his way home

Kolstedt phones home, letting his family and NKU know he’s okay

James Kolstedt, the student reported missing to university police by his family early in the morning of March 31, called home the same evening to say he was in Seattle, Wash., according to university police and university spokesman, Chris Cole. Kolstedt’s call ended a widespread effort to locate him, which included a Norse Alert and a search by police departments and rescue squads from across Campbell County. Full story

GenEd requirement changes cause concerns for students

If you usually avoid seeing your academic adviser before registering for classes, it would be best to give it a second thought this time around. A major overhaul of the general education program has gone into effect for all undergraduate students. This means that some of those classes you took for general education credit may no longer meet that requirement. However, the recent changes to the general education program are not supposed to leave any student disadvantaged or cause any student to spend more time at Northern Kentucky University than need be. Still, many students are concerned about the changes. Full story

A Judicial Council member has come forward to claim that Student Government Association President and Student Regent Keith Kaseke improperly tried to influence his vote on the recent removal hearing of former Executive Vice President Dennis Chaney. He also alleges that Kaseke punished him for casting a dissenting vote on the case by denying him a promotion to chief justice. Full story

Every bottle counts

NKU promotes the importance of recycling through campus-wide efforts

In 2009, Northern Kentucky University recycled over 190 tons of material, according to NKU’s Annual Recycling Activities Report. Among items collected were paper, plastic bottles, videotapes, copper and scrap metal. Paper and cardboard ranked near the top by weight collected. Full story

Can’t hear her fire alarm

NKU won’t choke up funds to get special alarm for hearing-impaired

A hearing impaired student at NKU faces a problem that is potentially life-threatening in the event of an emergency. Crystal Hudson, who is hearing impaired, would not hear the fire alarm if there was a fire in the dorms. She has struggled in her assertive efforts to work with the NKU Housing and Disabilities Center since the beginning of the semester so that she may receive proper safety accommodations in her dorm room. Man with gun was federal agent

Northern Kentucky University police searched for a man who reportedly had a holstered weapon Thursday. The man was later identified as a federal agent. Full story
